Police Check FAQs for HR and Recruiters

What is a police check?

A police check is a nationally coordinated criminal history check that lists an individual’s disclosable court outcomes, pending charges, and other relevant police information. It draws on records from all Australian police jurisdictions and helps employers assess a candidate’s suitability for a role.

Why should I run a police check on a candidate?

Police checks help protect your business from risk by identifying relevant criminal history. They support safer workplaces, guard against fraud and misconduct, and are often legally required for regulated industries or roles of trust, such as aged care workers, healthcare staff, teachers, childcare educators, disability support workers, finance and payroll officers, and security personnel.

Even where not legally required, they’re often used as part of best-practice recruitment screening.

Why use CheckWorkRights for police checks?

CheckWorkRights connects to National Crime Check (NCC), an ACIC Accredited Body. Police Checks are processed by NCC with the ACIC.

We give you full visibility over where each check is in the process. Our platform consolidates compliance records, integrates with your HR systems, and keeps a secure audit trail for every check. It’s faster, easier, and built for teams that need clarity and control, while giving candidates a smoother, more transparent experience with fewer back-and-forth delays.

How do candidates complete their police check with CheckWorkRights?

Candidates are sent a secure link to NCC to complete their police check via their service. Our mobile-friendly workflow guides them step by step, including identity verification, document upload, and consent, all without needing to create an account or download an app.

How long does it take to get results?

Police check results are typically returned to CWR within 24-48 hours. If further review by a relevant state police department is needed, results can take 10 business days or longer. ACIC publish approximate current processing timeframes and percentages on their website.

How long is a police check valid?

Police checks are ‘point-in-time’ documents. There’s no set expiry, but employers usually set their own validity period based on internal policies or industry requirements.

Can a police check be reused for different roles or employers?

Generally, no. A police check should be specific to the purpose and role for which it was requested.

What happens to candidate documents after the police check?

To protect privacy, identity documents are automatically and securely deleted after verification. However, we retain evidence that a check has been completed, and details of the designated stakeholder who reviewed and accepted the result , so records are available for audit or reporting purposes.
